Weekly Crafted Concept

This week’s insight: I’ve been thinking about…

How curriculum informs learning. And to what extent your planning for the course of learning in your environment should adapt, or hold true to its intentions.

What does an international football coach think about changing the plan because of a short term failure?

Curriculum planning is essential in any learning environment. It provides a structured framework to guide learners towards achieving their objectives. Yet failures, bad results, unmet goals, challenges are an inevitability. In these moments, maintaining curriculum planning becomes even more crucial.

Failures present an opportunity for reflection and growth. A well-maintained curriculum serves as a reference point to identify what went wrong, where adjustments are needed, and how to move forward effectively. Without a clear plan, it becomes difficult to pinpoint issues or implement improvements. Such curricula, or learning intentions, become even more powerful when intertwined with the deeper values and narrative/identity structures within the team or learning environment at large.

Perseverance and sticking to a plan promotes resilience and consistency for both instructors and learners. Abandoning a curriculum in the face of difficulties can create confusion, disrupt progress, and erode confidence in the process. By adapting rather than abandoning, leaders model problem-solving and adaptability.

Continuity is another critical benefit of maintaining curriculum planning. Even when adjustments are necessary, a well-structured plan ensures that overall goals remain within reach. This prevents disruptions from derailing the learning journey entirely and keeps the process focused.

Robust curriculum planning is cognisant of the potential for failure. By anticipating potential challenges and building contingency plans, teams in education or elite sport can minimise the impact of failures. Regularly reviewing and refining the curriculum ensures it remains relevant, practical, and aligned with the learners’ needs.
