On the Podcast this week…

Marcus spends some time reflecting on the importance of offering pupils and athletes a voice in decision making, feedback, and observations of the performance environment.

Weekly Crafted Concept

This week’s insight: I’ve been thinking about…

The importance of voice and choice for pupils and athletes, as featured on the Professional Association of Directors of Sport in Independent Schools (PADSIS) podcast: Tuesday Takeaways

Incorporating pupil and athlete voice and choice is vital for effective leadership and fostering lateral thinking. By engaging stakeholders, teachers/coaches/instructors can access diverse perspectives, improve problem-solving, and create more resilient decision-making processes.

Firstly, giving stakeholders a voice brings unique ideas and experiences into the foreground, encouraging innovative, laterally-considered solutions. Secondly, offering choice fosters ownership and engagement, as individuals feel more invested in outcomes they have co-created and fed back upon. Additionally, prioritising agency and opinion reduces groupthink by encouraging open dialogue and diverse viewpoints, resulting in better, more sustainable decisions which have not been suppressed by cultural/pervasive norms.

This approach builds trust and collaboration by showing respect for stakeholder input and confidence in their abilities. Finally, it prepares leaders to adapt to challenges by tapping into collective insights and fostering flexibility.
