How classroom learning and off-pitch learning design can leverage instructional research to support athlete learning. In my own practice, I observed the delivery of an analysis session by the Head Coach and was struck by the amount of WORK he was doing/had done in preparation.
Questions were used, and engagement was clear from visual cues.
But were the team demonstrating learning? Were they all thinking/processing/problem solving? The answer on this occasion was a murky, “maybe? I think so?”.
Through the cultivation of Learning Environment habits and expectations, careful Learning Design, and open and explorative opportunities for Learning Critique, coaches in the elite sport and education sector can accelerate their team’s learning goals…
